Building a Bamboo Bike – Day 5

OK, I am almost done building a bamboo bike frame. All by myself! The epoxy resin hardened after a couple of days and is rigid and stiff now. Flax and epoxy resin transformed into a fantastic composite material.

Now all Joints need to be cleaned again, and brought into its almost final shape. right now it looks too rough. And the metal parts (bottom bracket, steering tube etc) need to be set free, so the composite needs to be grinned down to the metal bits.

After everything is grinded down we need another epoxy-microsphere-putty. Basically the same that was used on day 2, but this time I added some colour again. I took black pigments, but you can – again – go crazy. Why not using glass dust to get a glitter surface…

We need to add some putty to get the joints into its final shape. Be generous, but not too much. Its only about the shape, not stability. The stability is already given by the composite material.

Don’t overdo it. All we need is, brining the joints into their final form. Once the epoxy hardened it’s going to be sanded down again.

At the end of this very short day, actually it was just half a day, the bamboo bike frame looks good already.
